Cabin Air Filter Guide: Functions, Types
Among the many components of a car, the cabin air filter, though seemingly insignificant, plays a crucial role in protecting the respiratory health of passengers, earning it the title of "gatekeeper" of in-car air purification. As people's demands for travel comfort and health continue to rise, the importance of this "small part" is gradually being recognized by more and more people.
The cabin air filter, also known as a car air filter or cabin air filter, is a filtration device installed in the car's air conditioning and ventilation system, primarily used to filter impurities from the air entering the vehicle. It is typically installed in two locations: one is behind the glove box on the passenger side, which is the most common location and relatively easy to remove and replace, the other is located at the air intake below the windshield, a location used in some models, requiring the removal of some trim pieces for replacement.
Regardless of the installation location, its core function is to purify the air entering the vehicle, creating a clean breathing environment for passengers.
The core functions of a cabin air filter are threefold: first, it filters impurities, effectively intercepting solid particles such as dust, pollen, and sand brought in from outside, ensuring clean air inside the vehicle; second, it adsorbs harmful gases, with high-quality products incorporating activated carbon and other materials that adsorb and decompose carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and harmful gases such as formaldehyde and benzene from exhaust fumes, and third, it prevents mold and bacteria growth, as its antibacterial filter material inhibits the growth of mold and bacteria within the air conditioning system, preventing odors and maintaining fresh air inside the vehicle.
Cabin air filters on the market are mainly divided into two categories: ordinary paper filters and activated carbon filters. The former uses non-woven fabric or paper as the medium and can only filter particulate matter such as dust and pollen. It offers basic filtration and is inexpensive, suitable for urban roads with good air quality; however, it lacks the ability to adsorb harmful gases, and its effectiveness is limited in heavily polluted environments.
The latter adds an activated carbon layer to the former, which, in addition to basic filtration, can also adsorb harmful gases and odors, providing more comprehensive filtration. It is suitable for areas with severe smog and exhaust pollution and is currently the mainstream choice, priced 30%-50% higher than the ordinary model.
The cabin filter is a consumable and needs to be replaced regularly, otherwise its filtration efficiency will decrease and malfunctions may occur. There is no fixed standard for the replacement cycle; it depends on the driving environment and mileage: in good urban driving conditions, it is recommended to replace it every 10,000 kilometers or 1 year, in smoggy, dusty, or congested areas, it is recommended to shorten this to 5,000 kilometers or 6 months.
If you experience reduced airflow from the air conditioner or unpleasant odors inside the car, you should check and replace it promptly. Failure to replace the filter for a long time will lead to filter blockage, not only reducing the air conditioning's cooling and heating efficiency but also breeding microorganisms, exacerbating in-car pollution and harming the health of drivers and passengers.
Replacing the cabin filter is relatively simple and can be done by ordinary car owners themselves. Taking the common installation behind the passenger-side glove box as an example, the steps are: press the buckles on both sides of the glove box to lower it, open the internal plastic cover, remove the old filter and remember its installation direction, then insert the new filter in the correct direction, and finally replace the cover and glove box.
If installing it under the windshield, the wipers and trim panel need to be removed, which is more complicated. Novice drivers are advised to have it replaced at a professional repair shop to avoid damaging parts.
When purchasing a cabin air filter, pay attention to four points: First, match the vehicle model. Check the model number in the vehicle manual or inform the seller of the vehicle's model and year to confirm compatibility. Second, focus on filtration performance.
In heavily polluted areas, prioritize activated carbon filters; check parameters such as PM2.5 filtration efficiency. Third, choose reputable brands to avoid inferior products releasing harmful gases. High-quality brands include Mann, Bosch, and Mahle. Fourth, check certifications; look for quality certification marks such as ISO.
