Car Filter Maintenance Guide
For car owners, the terms "oil filter, air filter, and fuel filter" are familiar; they're known in the industry as the "three-piece set" of car maintenance. The reason they're so frequently used in maintenance is that they directly affect the normal operation and lifespan of the engine.
The oil filter must be replaced at every service, while the air filter and fuel filter are generally replaced every other service. Behind this replacement frequency lies a precise logic of protecting the car's core components.
Let's start with the oil filter. As the "gatekeeper" of the engine's lubrication system, its workload far exceeds most people's perception. When the engine is running, engine oil performs multiple functions, including lubrication, cooling, cleaning, and sealing. During oil circulation, it inevitably mixes with metal shavings, wear-related impurities, and unburned carbon deposits from inside the engine.
The core function of the oil filter is to filter out these impurities, ensuring that the oil entering the engine's friction components is always pure.
If the oil filter fails or is not replaced in time, impurities will circulate within the engine along with the oil, acting like an abrasive in the precision mechanical gaps. This accelerates the wear of critical components such as pistons, crankshafts, and bearings, and in severe cases, can cause oil passage blockage, leading to fatal engine malfunctions like cylinder scoring and bearing failure due to insufficient lubrication.
Because its role is irreplaceable and its wear directly impacts engine safety, the oil filter must be replaced with every oil change. This is one of the most basic and stringent requirements in the maintenance manual, and there is no room for compromise regardless of the vehicle's driving conditions.
Now let's look at the air filter. It is the "first line of defense" in the engine's intake system, responsible for filtering dust, sand, pollen, and other impurities from the air entering the cylinders. The engine requires a large intake of air to mix with fuel and burn to generate power. If impurities in the air directly enter the cylinders, they will cause severe friction with the pistons and cylinder walls, resulting in cylinder wear, piston ring aging, and other problems.
It will also affect intake efficiency, leading to incomplete fuel combustion, resulting in reduced power, increased fuel consumption, and excessive emissions. The reason air filter replacement frequency is set at "every other maintenance" mainly depends on driving environment: If driving primarily on city roads with relatively clean air, filter wear is slower, and regular replacement is sufficient.
However, if frequently driving on dusty rural roads or near construction sites, the air filter will clog quickly, requiring a shorter replacement interval, or even replacement at every maintenance service. Many car owners neglect air filter replacement, thinking "it doesn't affect driving, so it doesn't need replacing."
However, prolonged use of a clogged air filter not only increases engine wear risk but also accelerates carbon buildup due to poor air intake. The cost of cleaning carbon deposits later far exceeds the cost of replacing the air filter.
The fuel filter, on the other hand, acts as the "purifier" of the fuel system. Its function is to filter impurities, water, and harmful substances such as gum from the gasoline. Whether impurities are introduced during gasoline production and transportation or sediment buildup in the fuel tank over time, the fuel filter will intercept them, preventing these impurities from entering delicate components such as fuel injectors and fuel pumps.
Fuel injectors are the core component of the engine's fuel supply system. With extremely small orifices, if they become clogged with impurities, it can lead to uneven fuel injection and poor atomization, causing problems such as engine vibration, unstable idling, and insufficient power. Conversely, if the fuel pump is worn down by impurities, it can result in insufficient fuel pressure, and in severe cases, it can completely stop, causing the vehicle to break down.
Fuel filters come in two types: internal and external. External filters are directly exposed to the external environment and wear out relatively quickly, typically requiring replacement every other service.
Internal filters, because they are sealed inside the fuel tank, are less affected by environmental factors and their replacement interval can be extended, but it is still essential to strictly adhere to the maintenance manual's recommendations.
It is important to note that inferior gasoline contains more impurities, which accelerates fuel filter wear. Vehicles that regularly use inferior gasoline must shorten the fuel filter replacement interval; otherwise, irreversible damage to the fuel system may occur.
Some car owners may wonder, "These three filters aren't expensive, so why do manufacturers strictly specify their replacement frequency?" Actually, a car is a complex system composed of tens of thousands of precision parts. The lifespan of core components often depends on meticulous care. While the individual price of the three-piece filter set is low, it's a fundamental guarantee for the normal operation of the engine, fuel system, and intake system.
Many major vehicle malfunctions stem from neglecting basic maintenance. For example, failing to replace the oil filter in time leads to engine wear, a clogged air filter causes excessive carbon buildup, and a failed fuel filter damages the fuel injectors. The repair costs for these malfunctions can easily reach thousands or even tens of thousands of yuan, far exceeding the cost of regularly replacing filters.
Furthermore, the replacement frequency of the three-piece filter set is not absolutely fixed. Car owners need to adjust it flexibly based on their own driving scenarios. For example, vehicles that frequently drive short distances and frequently start and stop have slower engine oil temperature rises, allowing impurities to settle more easily, resulting in faster wear and tear on the oil and fuel filters. Conversely, vehicles that frequently travel at high speeds have stable intake efficiency, leading to relatively slower filter wear.
However, no matter what adjustments are made, the maximum replacement cycle specified in the maintenance manual must not be exceeded. This is the bottom line for ensuring vehicle warranty and the safety of core components.
