Natural rubber (NR), derived from rubber tree latex, features a cis-1,4-polyisoprene structure with high elasticity due to flexible polymer chains and numerous double bonds. However, these bonds make NR susceptible to oxidation, ozone, UV light, and heat, limiting its aging and temperature resistance. In contrast, chloroprene rubber (CR), a synthetic polymer of chloroprene, contains chlorine atoms that enhance polarity, chemical stability, and resistance to aging, oils, acids, alkalis, and extreme temperatures. CR performs well in harsh environments—such as automotive seals and outdoor applications—maintaining integrity for 5–10 years versus NR’s few months. While NR excels in elasticity and rebound (80%–90%) and is widely used in tires and dynamic components, CR offers superior tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and thermal stability (-40°C to 120°C), suiting it for industrial seals, cables, adhesives, and flame-retardant products. Though NR has lower material costs and easier processing, CR’s performance advantages justify its higher price in demanding applications.
