Heavy Truck Exports Surge as New Energy Penetration Accelerates: China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Leads the Industry
Record Sales and Export Growth
Data shows that from January to August 2026, heavy truck sales reached 831,000 units, up 16.1% year-on-year, hitting a five-year high. Export sales reached 297,000 units, surging 51.7% year-on-year, making it the largest source of incremental growth. Domestic wholesale sales reached 534,000 units, up 2.7% year-on-year, supported by the continuation of trade-in policies. The export market's sustained high growth has become the core driver of the industry.
New Energy Heavy Trucks Accelerate Penetration
New energy heavy truck sales from January to August reached 193,300 units, up 70% year-on-year. In August alone, the penetration rate reached 47.43%, a new yearly high. The trade-in policy for old diesel trucks continues to drive demand, complemented by the cost advantages of battery-swapping models in short-haul scenarios at mines, ports, and steel mills. Meanwhile, natural gas heavy trucks face short-term pressure, with August terminal sales of 6,428 units down 62% year-on-year, as high LNG prices narrow the fuel price differential.
Market Share Leaders
China National Heavy Duty Truck Group (Sinotruk) maintained its leading position with January-to-August sales of 249,000 units, up 26.2% year-on-year, capturing a 29.9% market share. Its August sales reached 30,100 units with a 34.9% market share. FAW Jiefang ranked second with 140,000 units (16.8% share), followed by Shaanxi Automobile Group at 123,000 units (14.8% share), Dongfeng at 114,000 units (13.8% share), and Foton Motor at 113,000 units (13.6% share, up 24.9% year-on-year).
Sinotruk benefits from its high export proportion and leading new energy layout, directly capturing both the export boom and electrification trend. Foton Motor's cumulative growth rate is equally impressive at 24.9%. Industry analysts maintain a positive outlook, noting that companies with export advantages and core component positioning in natural gas and new energy technologies will be the first to benefit from the sector's structural opportunities.
