It has accumulated application experience in over 56 million passenger vehicles globally, with its indirect tire pressure monitoring function being particularly mature. Now, Dunlop is introducing this technology to the Chinese commercial vehicle market as a key element of its strategic return.
Dunlop's withdrawal and return is a microcosm of the evolving competition in the Chinese commercial vehicle tire market. In early 2023, Dunlop announced the cessation of truck and bus tire production and sales in China, becoming the latest foreign brand to exit this sector after Yokohama and Kumho.
At that time, domestic brands dominated with significant cost advantages, while foreign brands faced increasing pressure in a price-sensitive market. Sluggish sales and continuous losses became a practical consideration for Dunlop to scale back its operations and focus on the passenger vehicle market.
However, just three years later, Dunlop chose to re-enter the field with a technology-driven approach, reflecting the structural changes undergoing in China's commercial vehicle market. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in January 2026, domestic commercial vehicle sales increased by 23.5% year-on-year, reaching 359,000 units, with new energy commercial vehicle sales surging by 61.9% year-on-year, reaching a penetration rate of 22.6%.
Simultaneously, the implementation of the National VII emission standard is in its final stages, for the first time including tire wear particulate matter in emission control. This, coupled with the higher requirements for tire load, wear resistance, and energy consumption control imposed by new energy vehicles, is driving industry competition from a "price war" to a "technology war" and a "value war." This provides Dunlop with a market window to re-enter the market by leveraging technology.
Dunlop's core sensing technology, now deployed in the commercial vehicle market, demonstrates strong adaptability and practicality. This technology analyzes wheel speed sensor data and vehicle CAN bus information to achieve real-time monitoring of tire pressure, wear status, vehicle load, and road conditions, and can even predict the risk of wheel detachment. Its greatest advantage lies in achieving intelligent sensing without modifying the vehicle structure, offering both cost and efficiency advantages.
In February 2026, the load monitoring function of this technology was first applied to the new electric vehicle "Ruichi C5" under Chongqing Ruichi, marking its first implementation in the Chinese commercial vehicle sector. This function can sense cargo load and center of gravity changes in real time, thereby optimizing torque output and braking strategies, reducing driver workload, and lowering the risk of cargo damage. It is particularly suitable for urban delivery scenarios with frequent start-stop and loading/unloading.
Dunlop's return to the market is also benefiting from the strategic support brought by its global brand integration. Since 2025, Sumitomo Rubber has gradually regained the trademark rights of Dunlop in multiple regions worldwide, ending 26 years of brand fragmentation, and unified the global subsidiary brand under "Dunlop," releasing a new brand declaration "TAKING YOU BEYOND," emphasizing technological innovation and reliable quality.
In its strategy for the Chinese market, Dunlop clearly stated that it will increase its high-end product portfolio and accelerate technological innovation adapted to local needs. The implementation of core sensing technology is a concrete manifestation of this strategy.
Currently, the Chinese commercial vehicle tire market is still dominated by domestic brands, while foreign brands focus more on high-end segments. Dunlop, by focusing on core technologies and avoiding low-end price competition, concentrates on intelligent and data-driven capabilities, perfectly aligning with the new demands brought about by new energy vehicles and policy upgrades.
