By 2024, the number of public charging piles in my country will exceed 4 million, and the installation rate of private charging piles will exceed 60%. However, there remains ample room for expansion in areas such as supply and demand balance, technological adaptation, and scenario coverage.
II. Multi-Scenario Penetration: Diversified Practices in Charging Pile Deployment
From the perspective of application scenarios, the deployment of charging piles has demonstrated multi-dimensional penetration. In urban public areas, large commercial districts, transportation hubs, and parkland scenic areas have become key areas for charging pile deployment. For example, at Joy City in Chaoyang District, Beijing, fast-charging stations account for 70% of parking lots, supporting mainstream models of vehicles charging to 80% in 30 minutes.
This "charging + shopping" model effectively alleviates users' charging anxiety. At highway service areas, State Grid has achieved nationwide coverage of charging stations along major routes, and has even deployed mobile charging vehicles on busy roads to cope with holiday travel rushes. In community settings, the installation challenges of private charging stations are gradually being addressed. Many locations are implementing a "centralized construction and operation" model, whereby property management companies or third-party companies centrally plan charging station locations.
This approach, through power capacity upgrades, addresses the issue of insufficient capacity in older residential communities. One Shanghai community, using this model, increased its charging station installation rate from 35% to 82%.
III. Technological Innovation: The Core Driving Force Behind the Development of Charging Stations
Technological innovation is the core driving force behind the expansion of charging stations. Currently, charging stations are moving towards high power, intelligent, and multi-compatible features. Ultra-fast charging technology continues to advance in terms of charging speed. Xpeng Motors' 480kW Supercharging Station and Huawei's fully liquid-cooled Supercharging Station both achieve a "10-minute charge, 400 km of range," significantly reducing charging time.
Furthermore, charging stations are deeply integrated with IoT and big data technologies, allowing users to access real-time information about charging station location and charging progress via mobile apps. Some stations also feature "charging reservations" and "automatic power-off" functions, which, combined with peak and off-peak electricity prices, reduce charging costs.
Furthermore, "integrated solar-storage-charging" charging stations are becoming a new trend. By combining solar power generation, battery storage, and charging capabilities, they not only reduce reliance on the grid but also provide emergency charging services for new energy vehicles during power outages, demonstrating significant practical value in extreme weather conditions.
IV. Practical Challenges: Unresolved Issues in Charging Station Expansion
However, the expansion of automotive charging stations still faces numerous challenges. First, regional development is uneven. The density of charging stations in the eastern coastal areas is over three times that of the central and western regions. In rural areas, the coverage rate is less than 10%, making it difficult to meet the charging needs of rural users. Second, operational efficiency needs to be improved.
Some public charging stations have become "zombie stations" due to low utilization and untimely maintenance, resulting in a waste of resources. Third, charging standards vary. Although my country has issued a unified charging interface standard, the communication protocols and payment methods of different charging station brands are still not fully standardized, causing inconvenience to users.
V. Collaborative Efforts: A Three-Party Strategy to Promote the Development of Charging Stations
To further promote the expansion of car charging stations, the government, businesses, and users need to work together. The government should increase policy support and financial investment in central and western regions and rural areas, improve charging station construction planning, and introduce unified operational management standards to regulate market order.
Enterprises should strengthen technological research and development, achieve breakthroughs in key technologies such as ultra-fast charging and intelligent operation and maintenance, promote the deep integration of charging stations with new energy vehicles and smart grids, and improve operational efficiency.
Users should enhance environmental awareness, actively participate in the construction and maintenance of charging stations, and rationally plan charging times to facilitate the efficient operation of the charging station network.
VI. Future Outlook: The Important Value of Charging Station Networks
With the continued growth of new energy vehicle ownership, vehicle charging stations will become a vital component of urban energy networks. Through technological innovation, policy support, and market collaboration, my country will gradually build a widespread, intelligent, efficient, safe, and convenient charging station network, providing a solid foundation for the high-quality development of the new energy vehicle industry and injecting strong momentum into achieving the "dual carbon" goals.
