Family Car Maintenance Cycle Guide
The essence of car maintenance is to balance "wear and tear" from use and "natural aging," therefore, a "whichever comes first" approach is adopted.
Mileage dimension: Reflects the actual degree of wear and tear on parts. Engine operation and brake friction will accelerate wear and tear with accumulated mileage. For example, the lubricating performance of engine oil decreases with driving distance, and tire treads gradually wear down.
Time dimension: Addresses the aging of fluids and rubber parts. Even when the vehicle is idle, engine oil will become ineffective due to oxidation, brake fluid will absorb moisture, and rubber parts such as tires and seals will naturally harden and crack.
Taking a common family car as an example: If it has driven more than 5,000 kilometers within six months, maintain it according to mileage; if it has only driven 3,000 kilometers in a year, it needs to be changed regularly according to time. For frequently used vehicles such as taxis, mileage is the primary consideration, while for private cars parked for extended periods, time milestones need to be emphasized.
Maintenance Schedule and Core Items (Phase-by-Phase)
(I) Routine Minor Maintenance: 5000-10000 km / 6 months
The core maintenance involves changing the engine oil and oil filter, along with a basic inspection. The oil change interval directly depends on the oil type:
Mineral oil: 5000 km / 6 months
Semi-synthetic oil: 7500 km / 7-8 months
Fully synthetic oil: 10000 km / 1 year
Simultaneously check tire pressure and wear, brake fluid level, and lighting system to promptly detect potential problems such as abnormal tire pressure or fluid leaks.
(II) Mid-Term Maintenance: 10,000-20,000 km / 1 year
In addition to the minor maintenance, this includes replacing the air filter and cabin air filter. A clogged air filter can lead to insufficient air intake in the engine, resulting in reduced power and increased fuel consumption. In dusty areas, it can be replaced as early as 8,000 kilometers.
For cabin air filters, it is recommended to replace them every 6 months during smoggy days or the rainy season, prioritizing activated carbon filters for improved filtration. Also, check the condition of the spark plugs; nickel alloy spark plugs typically need replacing every 30,000 kilometers, while iridium spark plugs can be replaced up to 60,000 kilometers.
(III) Major Maintenance: 40,000-60,000 km / 2-3 years
Comprehensive maintenance covering fluids and wear parts:
Fluids: Replace brake fluid (must be replaced if water content exceeds 3%), transmission fluid (automatic transmission 40,000-60,000 km, manual transmission 60,000-80,000 km), coolant;
Components: Check timing belt (must be replaced at 60,000-100,000 km, breakage will cause engine failure), fuel filter (external filter replaced every 2 years, internal filter replaced at 100,000 km);
Safety components: Replace brake pads immediately if thickness is less than 0.6 cm, tires must be replaced at 50,000-80,000 km or if sidewall cracks appear.
Key variables affecting maintenance intervals
Driving environment: Maintenance should be performed earlier in extremely cold or hot, dusty or muddy, or congested road conditions. For example, in the high temperatures of summer in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, prolonged idling with the air conditioning on accelerates oil aging, and the maintenance interval should be shortened.
Driving Habits: Rapid acceleration and braking exacerbate brake pad and tire wear. Frequent short-distance driving (without sufficient engine warm-up) can lead to carbon buildup, requiring more frequent checks.
Vehicle Differences: High-performance vehicles have engines that operate under heavy load, typically requiring shorter maintenance intervals. While new energy vehicles don't require oil changes, battery and motor coolant still need to be changed periodically.
Avoiding Pitfalls: Reject Over-Maintenance
Refuse "Premature Maintenance": The manual recommends oil changes at 10,000 km; there's no need to force a change at 5,000 km. Over-maintenance wastes fuel.
Identify Extra Items: "Engine cleaning" and "fuel system cleaning" should only be performed as needed when acceleration is weak or idling is rough; they don't need to be done at every maintenance.
Keep Receipts: Keep maintenance receipts and parts packaging for easy tracing of quality issues. Prioritize original parts or top-tier brands for critical components.
