In terms of power, slow chargers are like "low-power appliances" in your home, with mainstream models offering 3.5kW, 7kW, and 11kW. 3.5kW was the early "home model," but now 7kW and 11kW are more common. For example, the charging station in your basement garage is likely 7kW; many company parking lots capable of simultaneously charging multiple vehicles are 11kW. 22kW three-phase slow chargers are even more powerful, typically installed in residential communities or office parks with three-phase power, suitable for scenarios with more concentrated charging needs.
The most suitable scenarios for slow chargers are actually our daily routines:
Charging at home before bed: If you have a private garage, park your car at 10 PM and plug it into a slow charger. A 7kW model can fully charge a car with a 400km range in 8 hours, and with off-peak electricity prices of 0.3-0.5 yuan per kWh, a full charge costs just over 20 yuan, significantly cheaper than gas. Charging at work: Park your car in the company parking lot in the morning, plug it into a slow charger on the way to get off work, and return home 8 hours later with a fully charged battery, ensuring no delays to your commute.
Slow chargers are also very cost-effective, costing only 2,000-5,000 yuan each. Installation is also simple, requiring no complex high-voltage equipment and connecting to a regular household power source. They can be easily deployed in residential communities and offices, making them a standard feature in both homes and offices.
2. DC Fast Charging Pile: The Speedy Solution for Long-Distance and Urgent Work
If slow charging piles are a steady, long-term solution, then DC fast charging piles are a quick, decisive solution. They don't rely on an onboard charger, but directly output high-voltage DC power to charge the battery, much like using a "super-fast charger" for your phone, and are several times faster than slow charging piles.
Fast charging stations are known for their power, ranging from 30kW to 350kW, and come in three speed levels:
Conventional fast charging (30-60kW): Commonly found in residential and shopping mall parking lots, they can charge a car with a 400km range to 80% in 1-1.5 hours, giving you enough juice to drive home in the time it takes to go to the supermarket or pick up groceries.
High-power fast charging (120-180kW): Often found on major urban roads, they can reach 80% in 30-45 minutes. For example, if you stop by on your way home from get off work, you can charge in the time it takes to grab a cup of coffee and have enough juice to cover your commute the next day.
Ultra-fast charging (300-350kW): This is standard at highway service areas. Charging stations like the Tesla V3 and Xpeng S4 offer 200-300km of range in 15 minutes. On long road trips, a 20-minute break for a meal is enough to fully recharge your car.
Fast charging stations are essential for these scenarios:
Long-distance self-driving: At highway service areas, fast charging stations can help you avoid long waits. For example, from Beijing to Shanghai, you can charge twice, 20 minutes each time, without interrupting your trip.
Business district: Going shopping or attending a meeting in the city center, stop at a charging station in the business district and charge your car for an hour using a fast charging station. This allows you to complete your shopping and fully charge your car without having to make a special trip to recharge.
Recharging operational vehicles: Taxis and ride-hailing services must continuously receive orders during the day, so they can only fast charge between orders. A full charge in an hour is sufficient, ensuring no impact on daily operating revenue.
However, be aware that fast charging stations have a higher barrier to entry, costing between 30,000 and 150,000 yuan each. They also require high-voltage distribution cabinets and transformers, and have high grid capacity requirements. Therefore, they are often concentrated in highway service areas, business districts, and other areas, forming dedicated charging stations.
