Off-Highway Tires (OHT) Overview
Off-Highway Tires (OHT) are specialty tires designed for non-paved road conditions such as mines, construction sites, farmland, gravel, and muddy terrain. They feature heavy-load capacity, cut resistance, low heat generation, and puncture resistance, with thick carcasses, deep treads, and strong self-cleaning capability.
These tires are designed for low-speed operations and cover engineering tires, mining tires, agricultural tires, and industrial tires (forklift, port tires). Compared with the massive passenger car and commercial truck tire markets, the OHT market is smaller in scale but has significantly higher technical and supply chain barriers, with higher manufacturing thresholds and per-unit value.
OTR Classification
As an important OHT branch, Off-The-Road (OTR) tires can be classified by structure into bias engineering tires, radial engineering tires, and giant radial engineering tires (generally referring to radial engineering tires with rim diameter of 49 inches or above, used for mining trucks carrying 90 tons or more, commonly known as all-steel giant tires).
Global Top 6 Ranking by OHT Sales
According to statistics from construction machinery CCM, the combined sales of the mining and construction engineering tire segments of the world's top 6 companies reached USD 6.194 billion (approximately RMB 41.45 billion).
No. 6 - Continental AG (Germany): OHT sales of USD 780 million, mining construction segment USD 452 million.
No. 5 - Titan International (USA): OHT sales of USD 1.006 billion, mining construction segment USD 162 million.
No. 4 - BKT / Balkrishna Industries (India): OHT sales of USD 1.107 billion, mining construction segment USD 376 million. The company has an annual tire production capacity of approximately 360,000 tons. In September this year, it announced plans to invest approximately 68 billion rupees in its core OHT business, carbon black, infrastructure, and a new domestic highway tire category, targeting approximately 8% of the global OHT market by fiscal 2030.
No. 3 - Yokohama Rubber (Japan): OHT sales of USD 2.474 billion, mining construction segment USD 820 million. The company, founded in 1917 and headquartered in Yokohama, has rapidly expanded its OHT business through acquisitions. In May 2023, it completed the acquisition of Trelleborg Wheel Systems (TWS) from Sweden's Trelleborg AB. In February 2025, it completed the acquisition of Goodyear's OTR tire business (G-OTR) for USD 905 million. In 2025, OHT sales reached 371 billion yen, up 27.5% year-on-year.
No. 2 - Bridgestone (Japan): OHT sales of USD 4.156 billion, mining construction segment USD 2.067 billion. The company operates 7 OTR production bases across Japan, the United States, and Thailand, with a dedicated OHT test center (ORTC) capable of full-condition simulation testing for giant tires over 4 meters in diameter.
No. 1 - Michelin (France): OHT sales of USD 4.992 billion (approximately RMB 33.4 billion), mining construction segment USD 2.317 billion. Its products cover mining, construction and industrial, port and material handling, agricultural, and forestry applications, including the X-Series radial tires (XDR, XTXL, XLD) for mining trucks and loaders. The company also offers the MEMS mining tire management system for real-time monitoring of tire temperature and pressure, along with tire retreading and full-lifecycle digital service solutions.
China's Position
Comparing with domestic industry data, China's non-road tire business sales are approximately USD 3.5 billion, representing only 56.51% of the combined mining construction tire revenue of the six international leaders. While a significant gap remains, it also indicates substantial room for growth. The ranking shows a clear tier differentiation: Michelin and Bridgestone together account for over 70% of the top 6 total, forming a duopoly in the global high-end mining and large construction equipment market.
