How to Choose Car Tires?
Tire performance directly impacts driving safety, handling, and ride comfort. Faced with different types of tires—summer, winter, all-season, and run-flat—many drivers often blindly choose one without understanding their specific characteristics, ultimately encountering problems such as slippage, premature wear, and increased risk of blowouts in specific scenarios.
In reality, the key to tire selection lies in "matching tires to your needs." Only by considering the operating environment, climate conditions, vehicle configuration, and driving requirements can tires achieve optimal performance and ensure a safe journey.
Summer tires (dry-weather tires), designed specifically for warm weather, focus on grip and handling. Their softer rubber compound increases friction with the road, while their shallow, wide tread grooves expand the contact patch and quickly drain water, preventing hydroplaning during rainy driving. Therefore, on dry or wet roads above 0°C, summer tires offer more stable starts and shorter braking distances, making them particularly suitable for drivers who prioritize a superior driving experience.
However, it's important to note that when temperatures drop below 0°C, the rubber in summer tires hardens, significantly reducing their elasticity and dramatically weakening the tread's adhesion to the road. This can easily cause slippage on icy, snowy roads, and even on ordinary wet surfaces, posing a significant safety hazard. Therefore, summer tires should never be used in winter.
Winter tires (snow tires) are a "safety weapon" for extremely cold regions, designed entirely around low-temperature adaptability and grip on ice and snow.
The tread rubber is infused with a special low-temperature elastic material, ensuring a soft, grippy surface even in extreme temperatures of -30°C. The tread design utilizes a combination of fine grooves and densely packed treads.
The fine grooves act like claws, digging into ice and snow to enhance grip, while the densely packed treads effectively prevent ice and snow from accumulating on the tread, further enhancing the anti-slip effect. For areas with heavy snowfall and extensive ice, some snow tires also incorporate metal spikes in the tread (i.e., ice tires).
These spikes penetrate the ice, significantly reducing the risk of slipping. However, winter tires also have significant shortcomings: Due to their softer rubber and anti-slip tread design, they wear out significantly faster on ordinary roads above 0°C. Long-term use not only shortens tire life but can also reduce grip due to excessive tread wear. Therefore, it's crucial to replace winter tires promptly when temperatures rise and roads clear of ice and snow to avoid unnecessary wear.
All-season tires (all-weather tires) are designed for environments with narrow temperature fluctuations and mild weather, focusing on convenience and balance. Their rubber formula is somewhere between summer and winter tires, providing a certain level of grip in warm weather while maintaining a certain degree of flexibility at low temperatures (no lower than -5°C).
Their tread design also balances water drainage with anti-slip properties. While not as efficient as summer tires in drainage or as strong as winter tires in ice and snow, they can still meet basic daily commuting needs.
For most of southern China—where temperatures remain above 0°C year-round and extreme weather like heavy snow and freezing temperatures are rare—all-season tires are a highly cost-effective option, eliminating the need for frequent tire replacements, saving the time and expense.
However, it's important to note that the "balance" of all-season tires can become "inadequate" in extreme weather: during sustained heavy rain, their insufficient drainage capacity can increase the risk of aquaplaning; during rare snowstorms, their lack of anti-skid performance can significantly compromise driving safety. Therefore, even with all-season tires, it's important to minimize unnecessary travel during extreme weather or take anti-skid measures in advance.
Run-flat tires offer a unique combination of safety and convenience, with their core advantage being their run-flat capability. The high-strength sidewall support structure allows the vehicle to continue driving for 50-100 km at speeds below 80 km/h, even if tire pressure drops to zero (due to a blowout or leak).
This feature makes them a popular choice for luxury vehicles without spare tires—it saves trunk space and prevents drivers from being stuck without a spare tire in the event of a flat. However, run-flat tires also have significant drawbacks: to maintain their ability to operate even when flat, the sidewalls must be thicker and stiffer, which directly affects the tire's elasticity, preventing it from effectively absorbing vibrations during driving and significantly reducing ride comfort.
Furthermore, the stiff sidewalls make repairs more difficult. In most cases, a run-flat tire cannot be repaired like a regular tire and must be replaced directly, resulting in significantly higher maintenance costs. Therefore, for drivers who prioritize comfort, drive in good conditions, and have a spare tire, run-flat tires are not the best choice.
In short, there's no absolute good or bad when choosing a tire; it's all about whether it's suitable. When choosing tires, car owners should first understand their specific usage scenarios. For those living in the cold north, a combination of winter and summer tires is the safest choice. For those in the mild south, all-season tires can meet daily needs. For those driving a luxury car without a spare tire and prioritizing safety in the event of a flat tire, run-flat tires are more suitable.
