The creation of a high-quality tire relies on a scientifically sound structure and high-performance materials. A tire mainly consists of the tread, sidewall, carcass, belt layers, and inner liner. The tread is the part of the tire that contacts the ground, directly affecting grip, wear resistance, and noise reduction.
It typically uses complex synthetic rubber compounds and features different tread patterns to adapt to various road conditions, including dry, wet, and icy conditions—drainage treads focus on drainage and anti-skid in rainy weather, off-road treads prioritize grip and anti-skid in complex road conditions, and noise-reducing treads minimize driving noise through optimized tread arrangement.
The sidewall connects the tread to the rim and needs good flexibility and tear resistance. It also displays key information such as tire specifications, load index, and speed rating.
The carcass is the tire's skeleton, composed of multiple layers of cord fabric. The material of these cord fabrics has evolved from early cotton yarn to high-strength fibers such as nylon, polyester, and aramid, determining the tire's load-bearing capacity. The belt layer, located between the tread and the tire carcass, is typically made of high-strength steel wires wound together. It enhances tread rigidity and improves vehicle handling stability. The inner liner layer uses a highly airtight rubber material to prevent air leakage from inside the tire and ensure stable tire pressure.
Depending on the usage scenario and vehicle type, tires can be divided into various types, each with its unique performance positioning. Passenger car tires are the most common type in daily life, and can be further subdivided into summer tires, winter tires, all-season tires, and run-flat tires. Summer tires offer excellent grip in high-temperature environments and are suitable for driving on dry summer roads.
Winter tires use special rubber compounds and tread designs to maintain good flexibility and grip on low-temperature and icy roads, ensuring driving safety in winter. All-season tires cater to the needs of different seasons, are highly versatile, and are suitable for areas with mild climates. Run-flat tires, also known as "air-proof tires," can continue driving for a distance after a puncture, providing emergency protection for the driver.
Commercial vehicle tires are divided into truck tires, bus tires, etc., focusing on high strength and high wear resistance to meet the needs of long-distance transportation and heavy loads. In addition, there are off-road tires specifically designed for off-road vehicles and high-performance sports tires for racing cars, each meeting specific performance requirements in different scenarios.
Proper tire maintenance not only extends tire life but also ensures driving safety. First, tire pressure should be checked regularly. Both excessively high and low tire pressure affect tire performance—excessive tire pressure leads to excessive wear in the center of the tread, reducing grip.
Insufficient tire pressure increases rolling resistance, causing excessive wear on the sidewalls and even potentially leading to tire overheating and blowout. It is recommended to check tire pressure at least monthly, especially during seasonal changes and significant temperature fluctuations, as tire pressure will fluctuate with temperature and needs timely adjustment.
Second, pay attention to tire wear. When the tread wears down to the "wear indicator," the tire has reached its limit and should be replaced immediately. At the same time, avoid uneven tire wear; if uneven wear is found, a four-wheel alignment should be performed on the vehicle immediately.
In addition, avoid contact between tires and corrosive substances such as oil and chemical solvents to prevent rubber aging and deterioration; when parking vehicles for a long time, choose a flat and dry place to avoid tires being subjected to heavy pressure for a long time, which may cause deformation.
