For car owners, car maintenance is an unavoidable topic in daily driving. Whether it's an economical car worth tens of thousands or a luxury vehicle worth millions, timely maintenance is crucial for maintaining good vehicle performance and extending its lifespan.
Timely maintenance keeps the vehicle in a stable operating condition, minimizing the occurrence of malfunctions. Just like regular checkups for people, it allows for the timely detection and resolution of potential problems, preventing minor issues from escalating into major breakdowns, ultimately leading to higher repair costs and even affecting driving safety.
However, many car owners easily fall into the misconception of "over-maintenance," believing that more frequent and comprehensive maintenance is better for the car. In reality, over-maintenance not only incurs unnecessary costs but can also cause hidden damage to the vehicle, defeating the purpose of maintenance.
Take the most basic and common car maintenance activity, changing the engine oil, as an example. Engine oil, as the "blood" of the engine, primarily functions to lubricate, cool, clean, and seal internal engine components. Changing the oil ensures that it continues to perform these functions.
With the continuous development of engine oil technology, fully synthetic engine oil has become the mainstream type of engine oil due to its excellent high-temperature resistance and oxidation resistance. According to industry standards and the recommendations of most car manufacturers, the replacement cycle for fully synthetic engine oil is typically around 10,000 kilometers. Some higher-quality fully synthetic engine oils, depending on driving conditions (such as primarily urban driving with little traffic congestion), can even be extended to 12,000-15,000 kilometers.
However, in actual use, many car owners, misled by traditional beliefs or some repair shops, still insist on changing their fully synthetic engine oil every 5,000 kilometers. From the perspective of engine oil's working condition, fully synthetic engine oil needs a period of "break-in" after being added to the engine to achieve optimal lubrication. This break-in period is usually 3,000-5,000 kilometers.
Changing the oil at 5,000 kilometers is equivalent to replacing it just as it reaches its optimal working condition, not only wasting oil but also depriving the engine of the opportunity to operate under optimal lubrication conditions.
In the long run, this may actually reduce the engine's protective effect because the engine oil cannot fully perform. Frequent oil changes also significantly increase vehicle operating costs – based on 20,000 kilometers driven per year, changing the oil every 5,000 kilometers requires four changes, while changing it every 10,000 kilometers only requires two. This can save hundreds or even thousands of yuan annually just on oil and labor costs alone.
Besides oil changes, excessive maintenance manifests in several other areas. For example, tire maintenance: some car owners frequently wax and maintain their tires, even replacing them prematurely before the wear level reaches the replacement standard. In reality, tire maintenance only requires regularly checking tire pressure, cleaning debris from the treads, and replacing tires according to the wear indicators or service life (usually 5-6 years).
Excessive maintenance is not only unnecessary but can also damage the tire rubber due to the use of improper maintenance products, affecting tire lifespan and safety. For example, regarding engine cleaning, some car owners believe that regular internal engine cleaning will make the engine healthier.
However, in reality, as long as standard-compliant engine oil is used, the oil itself has cleaning properties and can effectively remove carbon deposits and impurities from inside the engine. Frequent disassembly and cleaning when the engine is in good condition and has no obvious carbon buildup can actually damage the engine's internal seals, leading to problems such as oil leaks and air leaks, which is counterproductive.
So, how can we maintain our cars scientifically and appropriately? The core principle is to "follow the vehicle's owner's manual." Each car manufacturer will formulate detailed maintenance cycles and items based on factors such as the vehicle's engine characteristics and component materials. For example, how often to change the engine oil, how often to check the brake pads, and how often to change the transmission fluid are all clearly stated in the owner's manual. Car owners only need to strictly follow the manual to avoid over-maintenance or under-maintenance.
At the same time, car owners can also flexibly adjust their maintenance plans according to the actual usage of their vehicles. For example, vehicles frequently driven in congested traffic experience higher engine loads, leading to faster oil consumption and carbon buildup. In such cases, the oil change interval can be shortened appropriately (but not to 5,000 kilometers; for example, adjust from 10,000 kilometers to 8,000 kilometers). Vehicles frequently driven on highways or in favorable environments can be maintained according to the manual's recommended intervals.
In short, the core of car maintenance is "maintaining as needed." We cannot ignore the importance of maintenance for our vehicles, nor can we blindly pursue frequent maintenance. Only by mastering scientific maintenance methods can we minimize operating costs while ensuring vehicle performance and safety, allowing our vehicles to serve us better.
