Tire Damage: Repair Or Replace
"A puncture can be patched up," is a common misconception among many car owners. At roadside repair shops, the cost of a tire repair, ranging from 10 to 50 yuan, is far lower than the hundreds or thousands of yuan required for a tire replacement, leading many to habitually choose repair. However, this seemingly cost-effective decision can harbor hidden driving risks.
Data from a highway accident shows that approximately 30% of tire blowouts originate from tires that were repaired when they shouldn't have been—damaged tires are highly susceptible to failure at high speeds, in high-temperature environments, or under complex road conditions, leading to sudden drops in tire pressure, loss of tire control, and other dangers.
Car owners lack not only knowledge about tire repair but also the ability to assess the extent of tire damage. Most people only focus on the size of the puncture, ignoring crucial factors such as the location of the damage, the tire's age, and the condition of the cords. In reality, the core of tire repair is "repairing surface rubber damage." If the damage reaches the tire's internal structure, repair can only temporarily "plug the hole" and cannot restore the tire's load-bearing capacity and safety performance.
Different Damage Scenarios: Repair or Replace?
(I) Three Situations Where Tire Repair is Possible:
1. Puncture Location in the Center of the Tread: The center of the tread is the thickest area of the tire, with a rubber layer thickness of 8-10 mm, and is far from the vulnerable parts of the sidewall.
If the puncture is caused by a sharp object such as a nail or screw, and the puncture diameter is ≤6 mm, and the cords (the internal fibrous skeleton of the tire) are not damaged, it can be repaired through cold patching, hot patching, or mushroom plug repair.
Among these, mushroom plug repair can repair both the inner and outer layers of the tire simultaneously, offering the best sealing and durability, making it suitable for long-term use.
2. Minor Scratches Without Exposed Cords: Scratches on the tread with a length ≤3 cm and a depth ≤2 mm, damaging only the surface rubber without exposed cords or bulges, can be repaired by grinding and applying rubber. The repair will not affect normal use.
Minor Damage to New Tires: Tires used for ≤1 year and with ≤20,000 km mileage, if only a single small puncture (diameter ≤4 mm) occurs in the center of the tread, repair can maintain good safety and there is no need for immediate replacement.
(II) Six Situations Where Tire Repair is Absolutely Necessary:
1. Damage on the Sidewall or Shoulder: The sidewall is the weakest part of the tire, only 3-5 mm thick, with the internal cords directly bearing the weight of the vehicle and lateral forces. Once the sidewall is punctured, scratched, or develops a bulge, it indicates that the cords are damaged. Repair cannot restore its tensile strength, making it extremely prone to blowout at high speeds, and immediate replacement is necessary.

Severe Tire Aging: Tires that have been used for ≥5 years, or whose tread patterns have worn down to the wear indicators (bulges within the tread grooves), will exhibit cracking, hardening, and loss of elasticity and toughness. Even minor damage at this stage may lead to repair failure due to insufficient rubber strength, or even complete tire collapse, requiring immediate replacement.
Exposed Cords or Tire Bulges: Punctures or impacts causing broken or exposed internal tire cords, or bulges on the tread/sidewall (loose cords, rubber protrusions), indicate that the tire structure has been damaged. Repairs cannot restore the load-bearing capacity of the cords, and continued use carries extremely high risks.
Repaired Tires Damaged Again: If the same tire has been repaired two or more times, or if damage reappears near the repair site, it indicates a decrease in the structural strength of that area. Repeated repairs will further weaken tire performance, and replacement is recommended.
Tires Corroded by Chemicals: Contact with substances such as engine oil, diesel fuel, strong acids, and alkalis will soften and swell the rubber. Even without obvious surface damage, the internal structure is damaged, rendering repairs ineffective, and immediate replacement is necessary.
Tire Repair Method Selection: Not All Repairs are Reliable
Besides determining if a repair is possible, choosing the right repair method is crucial. Currently, there are four common tire repair methods, each with significant differences in applicable scenarios and safety:
External Repair (Plug Method): Simple to operate and the cheapest (10-20 yuan), but it only temporarily seals the puncture, has poor sealing, is prone to leakage, and does not repair the inner side of the tire. Long-term use can lead to rust and delamination. Suitable for emergency use, not a long-term repair solution.
Internal Repair (Cold Patching): Requires tire removal and grinding of the inner side of the tire before applying the repair patch. Price: 30-50 yuan. Offers better sealing, but its high-temperature and high-pressure resistance is average. Suitable for vehicles driving at low speeds on urban roads.
Hot Patching (Flame Patching): Uses high-temperature heating to fuse the repair patch with the tire rubber. High bonding strength and good durability. Price: 50-80 yuan. Suitable for vehicles frequently driving on highways and long distances, but requires high skill; improper operation may damage the tire rubber.
Mushroom plug repair: This method repairs both the inner and outer layers of the tire. The mushroom plug's "umbrella" is placed on the inside of the tire, and the "plug stalk" passes through the puncture for fixation. It offers the best sealing and stability, and costs 80-150 yuan. It is currently the most recommended tire repair method, especially suitable for small punctures in the center of the tire tread.
It is important to note that regardless of the repair method, a dynamic balancing test should be performed after the repair to prevent tire vibration at high speeds. The repaired tire should ideally be installed on a non-drive wheel (e.g., rear wheel in a front-wheel-drive vehicle) to reduce the risk of a blowout.

Tires are the only part of a car that comes into contact with the ground, and their safety is directly related to the lives of the driver and passengers. Besides correctly judging whether a tire needs repair, car owners should also perform routine maintenance: regularly check tire pressure (once a month) to avoid excessively high or low tire pressure that can lead to abnormal tire wear; rotate tires every 10,000 kilometers to extend tire life; avoid sharp objects and potholes to reduce tire damage; and thoroughly check tire condition before rain, high temperatures, or long-distance driving, addressing any abnormalities promptly.
