The Core Components of Tires: More Than Just Rubber
Tires aren't made of a single rubber material; they're composed of a sophisticated combination of multiple layers. The outermost tread, the surface, directly contacts the road. Its tread pattern has distinct functions: longitudinal treads primarily shed water, transverse treads enhance grip, and block-shaped treads are suitable for off-road driving.
High-quality tread rubber contains silicone compounds to reduce rolling resistance and enhance wear resistance. The tread thickness of an average family car tire is approximately 8-10 mm. When the tread groove depth is only 1.6 mm (the tread wear mark), it must be replaced promptly.
The sidewall is the rubber portion of the tire, marking key information such as tire specifications and production date, and also acts as a buffer against road impact. However, the sidewall rubber is thin and easily scratched by sharp objects. If cracks or bulges develop, they must be replaced even if they haven't penetrated, otherwise a blowout could occur while driving.
The tire's inner tire cord is the load-bearing core. Mainstream family cars mostly use polyester cord, which is high-strength and lightweight; high-end models may use aramid cord, which has greater tensile strength. Tires also include structures such as an airtight layer (to prevent air leaks) and a cushioning layer (to absorb shock) to ensure driving stability.

The string of numbers and letters on the side of a tire acts like its "ID card," containing important specifications. For example, "205/55 R16 91V": "205" represents the tread width (in millimeters). Wider width means better grip, but slightly higher fuel consumption. "55" represents the aspect ratio (sidewall height / tread width × 100%). A smaller aspect ratio results in a sportier tire, but with reduced vibration damping.
"R" indicates radial construction (the current mainstream type); "16" refers to the compatible wheel diameter (in inches); "91" is the load index, corresponding to a maximum load capacity of 615 kg per tire; "V" is the speed rating, representing the tire's maximum safe speed of 240 km/h. Different vehicle models require matching tires with corresponding specifications. Randomly changing tires may cause instrument panel data errors or affect the suspension system.
Daily Maintenance: The Key to Extending Lifespan
Proper maintenance habits can extend tire life by 2-3 years. First, check tire pressure regularly. The standard tire pressure for family cars is typically between 2.2 and 2.5 bar. Low pressure causes excessive wear on the sides of the tread, increasing the risk of blowouts; high pressure increases wear in the center of the tread, reducing grip.
It is recommended to check tire pressure at least monthly and readjust it with the change of seasons. Secondly, ensure tire rotation. Since the front wheels handle steering and the majority of braking, they wear faster than the rear wheels. It is recommended to rotate the front and rear wheels every 10,000 kilometers to ensure more even wear.

If a vehicle is idle for extended periods, localized pressure on the tires can lead to flat spots, affecting driving comfort. When cleaning tires, avoid using strong acid or alkaline cleaners to prevent corrosion of the rubber. Instead, use a neutral soapy solution. Also, remove small stones from the tread to prevent tread deformation.
Purchasing and Replacing: Avoiding Common Mistakes
When choosing tires, many car owners blindly pursue "big brands" or "low-priced products." In reality, selection should be based on the vehicle model and usage scenario. For family cars, prioritize quiet, comfortable, and fuel-efficient tires, such as the Michelin Privilege series and Dunlop LM705. Vehicles that frequently travel on mountain roads or difficult terrain should choose wear-resistant and impact-resistant off-road tires, such as the Goodyear Wrangler series.
Also, pay attention to the tire's manufacturing date. This can be determined by the four digits following the "DOT" code on the sidewall. For example, "2323" indicates a tire manufactured in the 23rd week of 2023. Tires should not be stored for more than three years. Even if unused, rubber aging can affect performance.
When replacing tires, it's recommended to use the same brand, specification, and tread pattern on all axles. If replacing only two tires, install the new tires on the rear wheels (especially on front-wheel drive vehicles) to avoid rear-wheel spin due to insufficient grip in rainy conditions. Additionally, dynamic balancing is necessary after replacing new tires to prevent vibration caused by high-speed rotation, which can affect the driving experience and the life of the suspension system.
