The Treadwear Grade (TGR), established by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), is one of the three main indicators in the "UTQG" tire certification system, along with traction and temperature resistance. This index is determined through laboratory controlled testing, using a "standard tire" with a TGR of 100 as the benchmark.
Value Meaning and Range
The calculation formula is: (Test tire wear life ÷ Standard tire wear life) × 100. For example, a tire with a TGR of 300 has a theoretical wear life of three times that of a standard tire.
The TGR of commercially available tires typically ranges from 100 to 800. Family sedans tend to fall between 200 and 500, while SUV and commercial tires may exceed 500, and high-performance sports tires may fall below 200.
It is not an absolute lifespan indicator.
It is important to note that the TGR is a "laboratory theoretical value." Actual service life will be affected by factors such as road conditions, driving habits, and tire pressure. For example, frequent driving on gravel roads or frequent sudden braking can significantly shorten the actual service life of a tire.
Key Factors Affecting Wear Resistance
Tread Rubber Compound
This is the key factor in determining wear resistance. High-wear-resistant tires typically use "hard rubber," increasing the proportion of reinforcing agents such as carbon black and silicon to improve wear resistance, but this comes at the expense of quietness and grip. Low-wear, high-performance tires, on the other hand, often use "soft rubber" to enhance wet grip and handling, making them suitable for those who value a superior driving experience.
Tread Pattern Design
Tires with larger tread blocks and narrower grooves offer a more complete contact patch and greater wear resistance, and are commonly found in economy tires.
Tires with finer tread blocks and wider, deeper grooves offer better water drainage and quietness, but their tread blocks are prone to wear, resulting in a lower wear resistance index. They are often found in comfort or sports tires.
Tire Structure and Processing
The strength of the belt material (such as steel wire or aramid fiber), the density of the carcass cords, and the temperature and time of the vulcanization process all affect the overall structural stability of the tire, which in turn indirectly impacts the wear resistance of the tread.
Wear Resistance Index Selection Strategies for Different Scenarios
For home commuting (annual mileage of 10,000-20,000 kilometers):
Preferably choose tires with a wear resistance index of 300-400, balancing durability and comfort. These tires meet the demands of daily urban driving and typically last 4-6 years without frequent replacement.
For frequent long-distance/commercial use (annual mileage of over 30,000 kilometers):
We recommend choosing tires with a wear resistance index of 500 or higher, such as some domestic commercial or off-road tires. The hard tread of these tires can withstand the wear and tear of long-term high-speed driving and complex road conditions, reducing operating costs.
For sports/performance needs:
For sports cars or those who pursue aggressive driving, choose high-performance tires with a wear resistance index of 200-300. Although these tires have a shorter lifespan (typically 2-3 years), they provide enhanced grip and handling response, improving driving safety.
Common Misconceptions and Precautions
Misconception 1: Focusing solely on the wear index and ignoring other performance characteristics
Some users blindly pursue a high wear index, overlooking the tire's grip and quietness. For example, using high-wear hard tires in northern China in winter can reduce grip due to the rubber hardening at low temperatures, increasing the risk of skidding.
Misconception 2: Believing a higher index equals better value
High-wear tires are typically more expensive, and if the vehicle's annual mileage is low (e.g., less than 10,000 kilometers), they may need to be replaced before the end of their service life (typically, the tire's shelf life is 5-6 years), due to rubber aging. This is wasteful.
Precautions: Regular Inspection and Maintenance
Regardless of the wear index, regularly checking tire pressure (once a month), removing foreign matter from the tread, and avoiding overloading can effectively extend the tire's actual lifespan and prevent "wear index failure" caused by improper maintenance.
