While seemingly commonplace, four-wheel alignment is crucial to driving safety and tire life. It precisely adjusts the geometry of the tires, steering, and suspension systems to ensure stable driving and even tire wear. However, many car owners don't know when to perform a four-wheel alignment, often neglecting it and causing excessive tire wear or potential safety hazards. A four-wheel alignment is necessary in the following situations.
Abnormal Tire Wear
The wear condition of the tire provides an intuitive indicator of whether a four-wheel alignment is necessary. If you notice severe tread wear on one side of a tire (for example, the left shoulder wears faster than the right), or if there's "feathering" or "sawtooth" wear, it's likely due to misalignment in the "toe" or "camber" settings within the alignment parameters.
For example, if the toe value is too high, the tires will rub against each other like scissors, accelerating wear on the inner tread. Abnormal camber can put excessive pressure on one side of the tire, causing uneven wear. Failure to promptly adjust these tires will not only shorten tire life (perhaps dropping from a normal 50,000 kilometers to less than 20,000 kilometers), but also increase the risk of skidding in rainy conditions or skidding during braking due to uneven tire grip.
Vehicle Deviation or Steering Wheel Anomaly During Driving
During normal driving, if the vehicle continues to drift to one side on a straight road after releasing the steering wheel (excluding road inclination), this indicates that the four-wheel alignment parameters are seriously misaligned. This deviation is often accompanied by "steering wheel misalignment"—that is, the steering wheel is tilted while the vehicle is traveling straight.
Also, a sticky, heavy feeling when turning the steering wheel, or a weakened self-centering ability (inability to automatically return to center after turning) may indicate abnormal steering system forces caused by alignment angle deviation. After a minor collision (such as hitting a curb or barrier) or a severe impact (such as driving over a pothole or speed bump at high speed), even if the vehicle's exterior remains intact, suspension components such as the linkage and bushings may experience subtle deformation, directly causing alignment errors.
For example, a sideways impact with a curb can easily change the front wheel's camber angle; driving over a pothole at high speed can deform the lower control arm, affecting the toe value. In these situations, even if there are no obvious vehicle abnormalities, it is recommended to perform a wheel alignment promptly to avoid potential safety hazards.
After replacing tires or suspension components
When replacing new tires, if the alignment parameters are not adjusted simultaneously, the new tires may not match the original suspension angles, resulting in a "new tire wear" phenomenon.
In addition, when replacing suspension components such as shock absorbers, lower control arms, and steering rods, the vehicle's geometry will inevitably change, requiring a wheel alignment. For example, after replacing the shock absorber springs, the change in vehicle height directly affects the caster angle. Failure to adjust this can result in heavy steering or drifting at high speeds.
Necessary Regular Maintenance
Even if your vehicle doesn't exhibit the aforementioned issues, a four-wheel alignment is recommended every 20,000-30,000 kilometers or annually. Over extended driving, factors like bumpy roads and frequent steering can gradually loosen suspension components, causing alignment parameters to drift.
Regular alignment can effectively prevent abnormal tire wear and maintain vehicle handling. Vehicles that frequently travel on unpaved roads or carry heavy loads require more frequent inspections to ensure alignment parameters remain within manufacturer specifications.
Wheel alignment is not an optional maintenance item; it's a critical step in ensuring driving safety and economic efficiency.
