Why are dashcam mounts important?
Dashcams have long become an indispensable part of today's automotive safety systems. The full effectiveness of a dashcam depends not only on its own hardware performance but also on the accompanying camera mount.
This seemingly simple accessory not only serves as a bridge between the dashcam and the vehicle but also provides a crucial foundation for ensuring stable, clear recordings and reliable dashcam functionality. While often overlooked by many car owners, its importance is irreplaceable in real-world scenarios.
Car dashcam mounts are available in a wide variety of styles, catering to different car models, installation requirements, and usage scenarios. The most common suction cup mount is a popular choice for many car owners due to its ease of installation.
It securely attaches to the car's windshield using a suction cup, eliminating the need for drilling or gluing. Installation requires simply pressing the cup against the glass and extracting any air inside for a secure hold. Removal is also easy, leaving no marks on the glass. This makes it ideal for users who frequently relocate or change vehicles.
However, suction cup mounts have certain requirements for their installation environment. If the windshield is greasy, dusty, or in cold environments, their adhesion may decrease, potentially leading to detachment. Therefore, ensure the glass surface is clean and dry before use. If the temperature is low, the suction cup can be heated to enhance adhesion.
Adhesive mounts, on the other hand, are known for their stability. They use high-strength double-sided tape to secure the mount to the vehicle's dashboard or under the windshield. Once installed, these mounts are virtually guaranteed to remain stable under normal use, providing continuous support for the dashcam and preventing it from shifting due to vehicle turbulence, which could affect the recorded footage.
However, adhesive mounts also have significant drawbacks. Once installed, they are difficult to remove. Forced removal can leave difficult-to-remove adhesive marks on the vehicle's exterior and even damage the interior. Therefore, they are more suitable for owners who use the mount on the same vehicle for extended periods.
When installing an adhesive mount, choose a flat, clean location that's not exposed to direct sunlight. Before installation, clean the mounting surface with an alcohol pad and allow it to dry before applying the mount to ensure a secure fit.
In addition to the two mainstream mounts mentioned above, there are also specialized mount designs. These include rearview mirror mounts, which attach to the vehicle's rearview mirror with clips or straps, making full use of the mirror's position without taking up space on the windshield, and providing a stable viewing angle.
There are also sun visor mounts, which attach to the vehicle's sun visor for easy adjustment of the recording angle while protecting the dashcam from direct sunlight. Each type of mount has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice should be based on the vehicle's structure, usage habits, and the specific installation location.
The mount's material is also a key factor affecting its performance and lifespan. Common mount materials on the market include plastic, metal, and silicone. Plastic mounts are lightweight, cost-effective, and highly malleable, allowing for a variety of complex designs to accommodate different dashcam models.
However, ordinary plastic brackets lack strength and heat resistance. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures and sunlight can easily lead to deformation, aging, and even breakage, compromising bracket stability.
Therefore, high-quality plastic brackets typically utilize reinforced plastics, such as ABS engineering plastics, which offer superior strength, toughness, and high-temperature resistance, effectively extending the bracket's lifespan and reliability.
