In contrast, ordinary all-season tires gradually harden and become brittle in low-temperature environments, significantly reducing their adhesion to the road surface and drastically diminishing their anti-skid performance.
From a tread pattern design perspective, snow tires employ a deep groove and numerous slits. The deep grooves quickly expel snow and icy water from between the tire and the road surface, preventing loss of control due to hydroplaning.
The dense slits act like claws, gripping icy and snowy surfaces and further enhancing traction. Furthermore, some high-end snow tires incorporate metal studs or silica particles into the tread pattern to enhance puncture and grip on icy roads, handling extreme icy and snowy conditions.
Correct selection is key to maximizing the performance of snow tires. Drivers should choose scientifically based on their driving environment and vehicle characteristics. First, consider temperature and road conditions: If winter temperatures in your area are consistently below 0°C with frequent snowfall and icing, choose all-terrain snow tires; if rain and snow are only occasional, choose hybrid tread pattern snow tires that balance snow performance and wear resistance.
Second, match the vehicle's specifications: the snow tire's size, load index, and speed rating must match the original tires to avoid affecting vehicle handling and safety due to size mismatch.
For example, SUVs should choose snow tires with higher load-bearing capacity, while small cars can prioritize quieter, more comfortable snow tires. Furthermore, it's recommended to choose snow tires from well-known brands, as these products undergo rigorous low-temperature performance testing, ensuring higher quality. Also, check for the "snowflake pattern" marking on the tires; this is an internationally recognized snow tire certification mark. Tires without this mark do not have proper snow performance.
Proper use and maintenance can extend the lifespan of snow tires and ensure stable performance. Regarding the timing of use, there's no need to wait for heavy snowfall to replace them. When the temperature remains below 5°C for a week, snow tires should be replaced promptly. Once spring temperatures rise above 5°C, all-season tires should be switched back to snow tires, as snow tires have lower wear resistance at normal temperatures, significantly shortening their lifespan with prolonged use.
Regarding the number of tires replaced, it's recommended to replace all four tires simultaneously to avoid excessive differences in grip between the front and rear wheels, which can cause the vehicle to veer or fishtail during braking. If this is limited, at least the front tires should be replaced with snow tires (for vehicles with drive wheels at the front), but braking performance will still be affected.
For maintenance, it's essential to regularly check the tire pressure of snow tires. Tire pressure will decrease in low temperatures and needs to be replenished promptly to maintain it within the range recommended in the vehicle's manual.
Also, regularly clean snow, gravel, and other debris from the treads to prevent clogging and impaired drainage and anti-skid performance. Furthermore, the wear limit for snow tires is 3mm; when the tread thickness falls below this value, they must be replaced immediately, otherwise their anti-skid performance will significantly decrease.
Many car owners have the misconception that "snow tires are a panacea," believing that switching to snow tires allows for unrestricted driving on icy and snowy roads. This is extremely dangerous. The core function of snow tires is to "improve grip," not "eliminate the risk of slippage."
