Choosing the right winter tire requires avoiding three major misconceptions. First, four-wheel drive vehicles do not eliminate the need for tire changes. The four-wheel drive system only improves initial traction; braking stability still relies on tire grip. Real-world testing shows that a four-wheel drive vehicle with all-season tires has a braking distance 11.2 meters longer on ice than a two-wheel drive vehicle with winter tires. Second, lower tire pressure is not always better.
In winter, tire pressure should be maintained between 2.5-2.7 bar. Too low a pressure will lead to uneven contact with the ground, actually reducing grip. Third, all four tires must be replaced. Partial replacement will cause uneven traction, creating a risk of skidding.
