Formula E Hankook Drive
Hankook Tire recently announced that it will leverage two top-tier North American racing events from late January to early February to strengthen its regional market management and brand sponsorship asset operation.
The company president personally visited the United States to promote the deep integration of its technological capabilities with its North American business through the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship Miami round and the Tomorrow Golf League (TGL) events. This is also an important step in its efforts to cultivate the core North American market.
The Formula E Miami round will start on January 31st at the Miami International Circuit near Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. As the third round of the season, Hankook is the exclusive supplier of Gen3 Evo iON racing tires for the event.
Following closely on February 2nd, the second season of the TGL will be held at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Hankook, as the league's first official tire partner and founding partner, will participate throughout the entire event. The two events target different high-end audiences, providing diverse scenarios for the implementation of its brand assets.
The company president's trip to the event served multiple core functions. In addition to assessing the operational effectiveness of the brand sponsorship assets, he also invited key North American dealers and business partners to the event. By leveraging the immersive racing environment, partners can directly experience Hankook's core technological expertise in electric racing tires, further solidifying the foundation of trust in channel collaboration.
This Gen3 Evo iON racing tire, customized for Formula E, incorporates several exclusive technologies: It utilizes an "EVolution compound"—a blend of new high-performance polymers, environmentally friendly natural oils, and high-silica additives—to achieve a precise balance between low rolling resistance and high grip, improving grip by 5-10% compared to the previous generation.
It also boasts excellent thermal management capabilities, maintaining stable contact patch and performance output under extreme racing conditions with fluctuating temperatures. The unique tread pattern and EV profile technology enhance the tire's structural rigidity, perfectly adapting to the high-load operating requirements of electric racing.
Furthermore, 35% of the tire's raw materials are derived from renewable and environmentally friendly materials, highly aligning with Formula E's net-zero carbon emission racing philosophy, and allowing for use on both dry and wet tracks without requiring tire type changes.
This technical data accumulated under extreme conditions has become a core asset for Hankook's electrification R&D, not only directly showcasing its technological strength but also providing strong support for product iteration and optimization in its North American new energy vehicle tire business.
This strengthened on-site management reflects Hankook's strategic focus on the North American market. North America currently contributes 23.3% of its global tire revenue, but approximately 75% of its products are imported, highlighting the urgent need to improve local production capabilities. Last December, Hankook's Tennessee plant began trial production.
With a total investment of $1.6 billion, the project will have an annual production capacity of 12 million tires upon full operation, aiming to increase North American local production to around 50% to address trade policy changes and reduce logistics and tariff costs.
The motorsport arena serves as a crucial link between Hankook's technological strength and regional business. Formula E's core electrification attributes align perfectly with the rapid growth of the North American new energy vehicle market.
By leveraging motorsport to validate and iterate its technology, Hankook can accelerate the transformation of racing-grade technology into civilian electric tire solutions, significantly enhancing its core competitiveness in original equipment tire partnerships with North American automakers.
Furthermore, the high-end consumer base reached by the TGL motorsport will help Hankook further strengthen its premium brand positioning, precisely addressing the product structure upgrade needs of the North American market and achieving a dual realization of technological and brand value.
From an industry trend perspective, Hankook's actions are a microcosm of the regional restructuring of the global tire supply chain. Faced with a complex trade environment, brands like Michelin and Goodyear are accelerating their localization efforts in North America.
Hankook is deepening its connections with government, businesses, channels, and users through on-site event management, while simultaneously expanding its factories to form a closed loop of "technology verification - brand penetration - production capacity implementation."
Hankook stated that North America is a core stage for validating its technological competitiveness and brand value. This move to strengthen on-site management through the events not only optimizes the operation of sponsorship assets but also aims to transform the technological advantages and brand influence accumulated through the events into practical momentum for localized production, channel expansion, and product innovation, driving sustainable growth in its North American business.
With the conclusion of the two events, the effectiveness of its North American market strategy deserves industry attention.
