How does the 3T index affect driving safety?
The 3T index of tires is a tire performance identification system stipulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). The full name is Treadwear, Traction and Temperature. These three indexes help consumers quickly judge the core performance differences of tires through standardized values, and are an important reference for purchasing tires.
1. Treadwear: Measuring the service life of tires
The wear index is the most intuitive indicator of the 3T index. It is used to indicate the wear resistance of the tire tread rubber. The value is usually between 100-800 (some special tires can reach more than 1000).
Meaning of the value: This index is based on the "standard tire" (setting its wear index to 100). The higher the value of other tires, the stronger the theoretical wear resistance. For example, a tire with an index of 200 has a theoretical service life that is twice that of a standard tire; a tire with an index of 400 has a wear resistance that is about 4 times that of a standard tire.
Influencing factors: Wear resistance is mainly determined by the tread rubber formula. Hard rubber formulas have a higher wear resistance index, but may sacrifice grip and comfort; soft rubber (such as sports tires) has a lower wear resistance index (usually below 200), but can provide stronger grip.
Note: The wear resistance index is only a reference value, and the actual service life is also affected by driving habits (such as sudden acceleration and sudden braking), road conditions (such as gravel roads, cement roads), tire pressure and other factors. For example, if you frequently drive on rough roads, even tires with a high wear resistance index will have a significantly shortened life.
2. Traction (traction index): Measuring wet grip

Test standard: The index is determined by the length of the tire's braking distance on wet roads. The higher the level, the shorter the wet braking distance. For example, the braking performance of AA-level tires on wet roads is better than that of A-level tires, which can effectively reduce the risk of rear-end collisions in rainy days.
Applicable scenarios: For vehicles in rainy areas or those that often drive on wet roads, it is recommended to give priority to AA or A grade tires. For users in dry areas, they can balance wear resistance and traction performance according to their needs (some tires with high wear resistance index may only have a traction index of B grade).
Limitations: The traction index is only for wet performance and does not directly reflect the grip on dry roads. Even if the traction index of a sports tire is A grade, its grip on dry roads may be far greater than that of ordinary AA grade tires, which needs to be judged in combination with specific usage scenarios.
3. Temperature (temperature index): measure heat dissipation and high-speed stability
The temperature index indicates the heat dissipation capacity and heat aging resistance of the tire when driving at high speeds. It is divided into three grades: A, B, and C (A grade is the best), which directly affects the safety of high-speed driving.
Core function: When the tire is driving at high speed, the friction between the tread and the ground will generate a lot of heat. If the heat dissipation is poor, it may cause rubber softening, structural strength reduction, and even cause tire blowout. A-grade tires can maintain a stable temperature during continuous high-speed driving and have stronger resistance to thermal decay.
Grade differences: C-grade tires are only suitable for low-speed driving (such as urban commuting); B-grade tires can meet medium and high-speed needs (such as national highways and ordinary roads); A-grade tires are suitable for high-speed long-distance driving (such as highways), especially for vehicles that often run on highways or large vehicles.
Related performance: Tires with high temperature index usually have more stable carcass structure and use high-temperature resistant rubber formula, which can reduce deformation during high-speed driving and indirectly improve handling and fuel economy.
4. Practical application and purchase suggestions of 3T index
The 3T index does not exist in isolation, and needs to be considered comprehensively in combination with the use scenario:
Urban commuting users: If economy and durability are the priority, you can choose tires with a wear resistance index of 300-400, traction grade B, and temperature grade B to balance life and basic safety.
Rainy day/wetland high-frequency users: The traction index (AA or A grade) must be prioritized, and the wear resistance index can be appropriately reduced to 200-300 (such as the southern region with more rainy days).
High-speed/long-distance users: The temperature index must reach Class A, and the traction index must not be lower than Class B to ensure high-speed stability and emergency braking performance.
Sports/performance demand users: A lower wear index (100-200) is acceptable, but the traction must be above Class A and the temperature must be Class A to meet the grip and heat attenuation requirements during intense driving.
