Styrene-Butadiene Rubber Applications
As one of the most produced and widely used varieties of synthetic rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber occupies an irreplaceable position in the fields of tire industry, automobile manufacturing and mechanical engineering due to its excellent comprehensive performance.
Its molecular structure contains two monomer units, styrene and butadiene. This unique composition makes it have good wear resistance, aging resistance and processing performance, and its cost is lower than that of natural rubber, making it an ideal choice in industrial production.
I. Tires and tire products: key applications of core raw materials
In the field of tires and tire products, styrene-butadiene rubber is one of the core raw materials. The tread, sidewall and carcass of the tire and other key parts use a large number of styrene-butadiene rubber and natural rubber systems, in which the amount of styrene-butadiene rubber in the tread rubber can reach 30% - 50%.
This is because the wear resistance of styrene-butadiene rubber is 20% - 30% higher than that of natural rubber, which can significantly extend the service life of the tire; at the same time, its hysteresis loss is small, which can reduce the rolling resistance of the tire and help improve the fuel economy of the vehicle.
In high-performance tires, such as radial tires, by adjusting the styrene content (usually controlled at 20% - 30%), the rubber's anti-skid and grip can be further optimized to meet the safety needs of driving in rainy days.
In addition, styrene-butadiene rubber is also widely used in products such as inner tubes, cushion belts, and tire reinforcement layers. By using it in combination with materials such as butyl rubber, it can improve the air tightness and fatigue resistance of the products.
2. Automotive parts manufacturing: performance guarantee of multiple components
Automotive parts manufacturing is another important application area of styrene-butadiene rubber. In automotive sealing systems, door seals, window guides, trunk seals and other products mostly use a blend of styrene-butadiene rubber and EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber).
Using the good elasticity and processing fluidity of styrene-butadiene rubber, it can be made into sealing profiles with complex cross-sections, effectively blocking dust, rain and noise.
Shock absorbers, buffer blocks and other components in the automotive shock absorption system rely on the high elasticity and fatigue resistance of styrene-butadiene rubber. Its dynamic mechanical properties are stable and it can maintain a good shock absorption effect in the temperature range of -40℃ to 100℃, reducing the bumpy feeling during vehicle driving.
In addition, styrene-butadiene rubber is also used to make the inner layer of automotive hoses (such as cooling water pipes and fuel pipes). With its oil resistance and chemical corrosion resistance, it can ensure the long-term stable operation of the pipeline system.
3. Mechanical rubber products: a widely adapted industrial choice
In the field of mechanical rubber products, styrene-butadiene rubber is also widely used. The cover rubber and core rubber of industrial conveyor belts use a large amount of styrene-butadiene rubber. Its excellent wear resistance and tear resistance can meet the transportation needs of heavy-duty materials such as coal and ore, and its service life is more than 30% longer than that of natural rubber conveyor belts.
In terms of shock-absorbing products, machine tool foot pads, engine shock absorbers and other products can obtain higher hardness and rigidity by using high styrene content styrene butadiene rubber (styrene content 40% - 50%), which can effectively absorb the vibration and noise generated by mechanical operation.
In addition, styrene butadiene rubber is also used to make various seals (such as O-rings, gaskets), rubber rollers and hoses, etc., and plays the role of sealing, transmission and conveying medium in equipment such as machine tools, printing machinery, and hydraulic systems.
Fourth, development trend: dual drive of environmental protection and performance upgrade
It is worth noting that with the improvement of environmental protection requirements, the application ratio of emulsion polymerized styrene butadiene rubber (ESBR) and solution polymerized styrene butadiene rubber (SSBR) is changing.
SSBR has the advantages of strong controllability of molecular structure and low heat generation, and its use in green tires has increased year by year, while ESBR still maintains a stable market share in low-end and mid-end tires and general rubber products with its mature production process.
In the future, the performance of styrene-butadiene rubber will be further improved through modification technology (such as introducing functional groups and blending with other polymers), and its application areas will also expand to high-end sealing materials, special shock-absorbing products, etc., continuously promoting the technological upgrading of related industries.
