Generally speaking, properly used economy tires can provide a minimum of 30,000-40,000 kilometers of driving, while performance tires can last at least 20,000 kilometers. However, improper use can significantly shorten the lifespan of tires. How can you protect your tires and extend their lifespan? Here are six traditional tire care tips every tire shop must know.
Regularly Check Tire Pressure
This is the simplest method, known to many but rarely practiced. Air pressure plays a crucial role in tire operation, not only absorbing road vibrations but also maintaining tire rigidity. Excessive tire pressure reduces tire contact with the road, causing severe wear in the center tread and shortening tire lifespan.
Excessive tire pressure is even more harmful than excessive tire pressure. Insufficient tire pressure not only causes excessive wear on the tire sides, but also increases the chance that the outer edge of the rim will directly impact the road, unprotected by the pressure. This can lead to rim deformation and cracking.
Regularly rotate tires to ensure even wear on all four wheels.
Regularly rotate front and rear tires. The main reason for rotating front and rear tires is that tires that provide driving force typically wear faster than tires that don't. For example, on a front-wheel drive car, the front wheels will wear faster than the rear wheels, and on a rear-wheel drive car, the rear wheels will wear faster than the front wheels. For a four-wheel drive car, the torque distribution depends on the front and rear wheels. Therefore, if you rotate your front and rear tires before regularly driving them for a while, you won't be able to wear all four tires out simultaneously. You might then have to replace two new tires on the drive wheels first. This not only prevents you from effectively managing your tire replacement cycle, but the rubber on the two unused tires will also age and harden over time, resulting in uneven grip on all four wheels and poor handling.
Tire rotations should be performed every 10,000 kilometers. For single-track tires, in addition to rotating the front and rear wheels, it's best to also replace the aluminum rims and rotate both wheels to reduce excessive wear on one side. However, tire dealers would like to remind everyone that if the difference in tread depth between the inside and outside tires exceeds 1mm, there's no need to rotate them, as doing so will only cause the steering wheel to tug.
Proper Four-Wheel Alignment Reduces Uneven Tire Wear
Four-wheel alignment isn't just for modified vehicles; stock vehicles also require proper chassis alignment to ensure stable vehicle dynamics and safe high-speed performance. Incorrect alignment not only affects tire wear but also creates an unstable driving environment, potentially more damaging than any other vehicle component. It's a crucial and fundamental chassis maintenance item.
Incorrect four-wheel alignment often results in reduced fuel consumption and abnormal wear of chassis components. While a vehicle is typically aligned when new tires are installed, the alignment can be affected by potholes, road bouncy bumps, or increased gaps in chassis components due to wear. Therefore, it's recommended to perform a four-wheel alignment every 20,000 kilometers.
Correctly match tire rim specifications to ensure proper tire wall stress.
Some factory tires often don't offer larger tire rims due to cost considerations. Therefore, many car owners often upgrade to meet their needs. Some even deliberately pair wide rims with narrow tires to create an exaggerated visual effect. However, an improper tire rim size combination can shorten tire life.
Install a tire pressure monitor for instrument monitoring.
Tire blowouts are one of the main threats to driving safety. Maintaining normal tire pressure is the simplest and most important step to reducing the risk of blowouts. However, most people don't check tire pressure daily. Installing a tire pressure monitor can help you monitor your tire pressure at all times.
Currently, tire pressure monitoring systems can be primarily categorized as "indirect" and "direct." Most commercially available tire pressure monitors fall into the latter category, meaning the transmitter (tire pressure monitor) is either directly attached to the valve stem (external tire type) or installed inside the tire (in-tire tire type) instead of the factory valve. Either type is superior to having no valve at all.
Avoid misusing tire oil, as this can cause tire quality degradation.
Tires, like the human body, require regular cleaning and maintenance, especially the sidewalls. If left uncleaned for extended periods, a yellowish-brown residue will accumulate on the surface, creating an unsightly appearance.
