New Energy Heavy Truck Landscape Reshaped: Sinotrank Leads, XCMG and SANY Close Behind
According to compulsory insurance data, domestic new energy heavy truck cumulative sales from January to September 2026 reached approximately 226,400 units, a year-on-year increase of 64%. In September alone, the terminal new energy heavy truck penetration rate exceeded 50% for the first time, a landmark milestone.
Top Four Competitors with Divergent Strategies
Sinotrank (China National Heavy Duty Truck Group) sold 36,620 units in the first nine months, a 139% year-on-year increase, leaping from fourth place last year to first. September single-month sales of 5,502 units represented a 112% year-on-year surge with a 16.6% market share. Sinotrank's advantage lies not only in products but in its group channels and export system, with new energy heavy truck exports becoming its second growth engine.
XCMG ranked second with 35,889 units, up 62% year-on-year. As the three-time consecutive new energy heavy truck sales champion, XCMG faced strong challenges from Sinotrank this year, with only a 731-unit gap. On September 20, XCMG launched the "HanJing" series for trunk logistics, with a maximum loaded transport distance of 500 kilometers, obtaining the industry's first Level 1 energy efficiency certification. This represents a strategic shift from closed scenarios to trunk routes.
SANY Group recorded 31,422 units, up 51% year-on-year, with its advantages in mining and other closed scenarios remaining solid. FAW Jiefang sold 28,957 units, up 45%, with coal transport scenario sales exceeding 7,000 units.
Structural Imbalance
Despite the 50% monthly penetration milestone, the structure is highly unbalanced. In closed short-haul scenarios such as steel mill transport, port logistics, and mine aggregate transport, electric heavy truck penetration exceeds 70%. However, for medium-to-long-distance trunk routes exceeding 500 kilometers, new energy penetration is less than 1%, with trunk scenarios at only 0.9%.
This means the second half of new energy heavy trucks is not about who sells more, but who can make the business model work on trunk routes.
Export as Second Growth Curve
While domestic penetration rises, exports are becoming a second growth curve. Customs data shows that from January to July 2026, China exported over 2,500 electric tractors, a year-on-year increase exceeding 870%. The significance of exports goes beyond incremental volume; it represents global validation of technical capability and product maturity.
Mid-Tier Consolidation
Positions 5 through 8 (Shaanxi Automobile, Foton, Dongfeng, Yuancheng) have remained in exactly the same positions for two consecutive years, signaling mid-tier consolidation. The competitive threshold has upgraded from having products to having channels, services, financial solutions, and regional operational capabilities, making it much harder for new entrants to break into the top eight.
