Pirelli’s Mexico Expansion Plan
Amidst the complex and volatile global tire market, Pirelli is actively adjusting its capacity deployment strategy. Recently, Pirelli clarified that it is advancing capacity expansion at its Mexican plant in accordance with its strategic industrial plan. As early as its earnings call on July 31, 2025, Pirelli revealed its plans for capacity expansion in Mexico, a key initiative focused on medium- and long-term development.
Pirelli's US Market Supply Faces Dual Challenges
Currently, Pirelli faces numerous supply challenges in the US market. The US production expansion plan remains undecided, and this uncertainty makes it difficult for Pirelli to secure market supply by increasing domestic production capacity.
At the same time, Brazil has significantly increased its export tariffs to the US to 50%, in addition to a 25% tariff on auto parts and a 10% general tariff on motorcycle and bicycle tires. This series of tariff increases has further increased the cost of Pirelli tires, already priced high per unit, entering the US market, severely squeezing profit margins. The Mexican plant has become a core hub for supplying the US market.
Against this backdrop, the importance of the Mexican plant for Pirelli's US market supply has become increasingly prominent. The Mexican plant occupies a key position in Pirelli's global footprint, boasting both a robust production capacity and a geographical advantage, enabling convenient product delivery to the US market. Currently, the Mexican plant has become one of Pirelli's core hubs for serving the US market.
€115 Million Investment Drives Capacity Upgrade at the Mexican Plant
In fact, Pirelli has been actively optimizing the production capacity of its Mexican plants. Previously, Pirelli invested €115 million in its plant in Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico.
This investment aims to increase the plant's annual production capacity for passenger and light truck tires to 8.5 million units by the end of 2025. With this gradual increase in production capacity, the Mexican plant will be able to better meet US market demand for Pirelli tires.
"Surgical" Adjustments Focus on US Market Orders
To further improve the Mexican plant's efficiency in serving the US market, Pirelli has also adjusted its production structure. In the short term, the Mexican plant will minimize production of all non-US products and prioritize 100% of its limited production capacity for tire orders that can enter the US market duty-free.
This "surgical" adjustment will allow the Mexican plant to concentrate resources, ensuring that every inch of production capacity is dedicated to the US market, which offers the highest profits and lowest risks.
Global Supply "Redistribution" Unleashes the Potential of the Mexican Plant
Pirelli has also redistributed its global tire supply. Tires previously supplied by its Mexican plant to the European and domestic markets will be transferred to Pirelli plants in other regions not subject to US tariffs. This move effectively "frees up" the Mexican plant's production potential, allowing it to devote more focus and capacity to supplying the US market.
In the long term, Pirelli's plan to expand its Mexican plant's production capacity is not only a temporary measure to address the current supply constraints in the US market, but also a key strategic decision based on its global strategic layout.
By strengthening its Mexican plant's production capacity, Pirelli can better mitigate the risks associated with trade policy fluctuations, stabilize its US market share, and lay a solid foundation for the company's continued development in the global tire market.
