Southeast Asia Rubber Price Surge
Southeast Asia, as the core production region of natural rubber globally, accounts for over 80% of the world's total output. The production of countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam directly dominates the supply-demand structure and price trends in the global rubber market. Recently, Southeast Asian natural rubber prices have shown a significant upward trend.
The core driving force stems from the impact of abnormal weather on the supply side, coupled with an imbalance in the supply-demand structure. This fluctuation has rapidly transmitted to the downstream industrial chain, significantly pushing up production costs in the tire manufacturing industry and bringing temporary pressure to the industry's development.
Climate factors are the primary driver of this rubber price increase. The growth of natural rubber is extremely sensitive to climate conditions; suitable temperature, humidity, and rainfall patterns are crucial for ensuring yield. In recent years, affected by global climate change, major producing areas in Southeast Asia have frequently encountered extreme weather disturbances.
In the second half of 2025, core producing areas such as southeastern Thailand and southern Vietnam experienced continuous heavy rainfall, with rainfall 52% higher than the same period in previous years.
This led to severe waterlogging in rubber plantations, forcing the interruption of rubber tapping operations, and causing some rubber trees to suffer from root rot and diseases. The previous El Niño phenomenon triggered periods of drought, shortening the rubber tree's latex production cycle and reducing latex yield.
The combined effect of these extreme weather events resulted in a mere 0.5% year-on-year increase in global natural rubber production in 2025. Indonesian production declined by 9.8% and Vietnamese production by 1.3%, with the supply contraction directly triggering market concerns about rubber shortages and becoming the catalyst for price increases.
The imbalance between supply and demand further amplified the upward momentum in prices. While supply growth was weak, demand showed a steady recovery. The recovery of the global automotive industry, especially the rapid development of new energy vehicles, drove continued growth in tire demand.
Data shows that global natural rubber consumption is projected to reach 15.565 million tons in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 1.3%, with demand in major consuming countries such as China and India growing by 2.5% and 3.4%, respectively. Furthermore, the implementation of the EUDR Zero Deforestation Act has driven the global rubber industry towards compliance.
Major producing countries like Thailand have adjusted their tariff policies, imposing tariffs on primary rubber blocks that do not meet compliance requirements, while simultaneously incentivizing the export of high-value-added compliant products. While this policy is beneficial for long-term industrial upgrading, it has, in the short term, increased the production cost of compliant rubber, further exacerbating the supply shortage of high-end rubber raw materials and driving up the price premium for compliant rubber.
The continued rise in rubber prices has directly impacted downstream tire manufacturing, significantly increasing production costs. Natural rubber and synthetic rubber are the core raw materials for tire production, accounting for 54% of the total tire manufacturing cost. Adding the costs of other raw materials such as steel, the core raw materials account for over 60%. From November 2025 to the present, the main rubber price has rapidly climbed from 14,500 yuan/ton to 16,190 yuan/ton, an increase of over 11% in just two months.
Synthetic rubber has followed suit, driven by natural rubber, creating a situation of "both rubbers rising simultaneously." For tire companies, every fluctuation in raw material prices directly impacts profits. Currently, the domestic tire market is experiencing weak demand, high inventory levels, and fierce price wars on e-commerce platforms.
The average price of mainstream tire specifications has declined year-on-year for several consecutive years, with some products nearing the cost line, creating a "death cross" of rising raw material prices and falling product prices, severely squeezing profit margins.
Faced with cost pressures, tire companies have taken various measures, including signing long-term agreements with suppliers to lock in some procurement prices, adjusting product structures to increase the proportion of high-end tires to pass on costs, and some companies reducing import costs by using bonded warehouses and optimizing logistics.
However, in the long run, the pressure of rising rubber prices will be difficult to fully absorb, and industry differentiation will intensify. Leading companies with supply chain integration capabilities and stable compliant procurement channels will be better able to withstand risks. Looking ahead, natural rubber prices are likely to remain relatively strong in 2026.
The aging of global rubber trees limits production potential, and supply-side constraints will persist for a long time. The tire industry needs to continuously address the challenges of fluctuating raw material costs and improve its resilience through technological innovation and supply chain collaboration.
