Sumitomo Rubber H1 2025 Results
Overall Performance Disappoints: Revenue and Profit Decline
On August 7, 2025, Sumitomo Rubber released its semiannual report, a wake-up call that shattered market expectations for stable growth. In the first six months of 2025, this renowned tire company experienced declining revenue and profits.
Sales for the first half of the year fell 2.5% year-on-year to 572.192 billion yen (approximately RMB 27.889 billion), while operating profit plummeted 33.1% to just 28.31 billion yen (approximately RMB 1.38 billion).
Tire Business: Stable Sales but Significant Profit Decline
A deeper dive into the business segments reveals that the tire business, a core pillar of Sumitomo Rubber, exhibited a complex situation in the first half of 2025: relatively stable sales revenue but sharply shrinking profits.
Sales revenue fell only slightly by 1.6%, reaching 488.329 billion yen (23.801 billion RMB) in the six months, demonstrating the resilience of Sumitomo Rubber's fundamentals in the tire market. However, profits plummeted by 34.7%, far exceeding the decline in group operating profit, contributing only 22.205 billion yen (1.082 billion RMB) in the first half of the year.
Main Reasons for Profit Decline: Rising Raw Material Prices and High Global Inflation
Sumitomo Rubber attributed the sharp decline in profits primarily to the dual squeeze of soaring raw material prices and high global inflation. For example, natural rubber prices have been on a rampage since July 2024. As a key raw material in tire manufacturing, the continued rise in natural rubber prices has directly increased production costs, severely eroding Sumitomo Rubber's profit margins.
Prices of other raw materials, such as synthetic rubber and carbon black, have also fluctuated frequently due to shifts in market supply and demand and the unstable global economic environment, further exacerbating cost pressures.
Overseas Market Divergence: Supporting Business Declines, Replacement Market Performs Reliably Sumitomo Rubber faces a starkly different landscape in its overseas markets. In the supporting market, its supporting business has declined due to factors such as production cuts by automakers and supply chain adjustments.
Some automakers have reduced production capacity in response to market uncertainty, directly leading to a decrease in Sumitomo Rubber's tire orders. However, the situation in the overseas replacement market is relatively positive. Sales of its flagship products remain stable thanks to its brand influence and product quality.
In the Chinese market in particular, despite Dunlop's premium positioning and high price, the company has maintained sales at the same level as in the same period in 2024, supported by an aggressive sales strategy. Sumitomo Rubber has successfully attracted Chinese consumers by optimizing sales channels, strengthening brand promotion, and launching targeted promotional activities, demonstrating its strong adaptability in mature markets.
Looking ahead, Sumitomo Rubber faces numerous challenges and opportunities. Cost control remains a top priority. The company needs to mitigate the pressure of rising raw material prices by establishing long-term and stable partnerships with suppliers, optimizing procurement strategies, and exploring alternative raw material options.
In terms of market expansion, Sumitomo Rubber should continue to deepen its presence in the overseas replacement market, particularly in emerging markets with enormous potential. It should increase investment in product research and development to launch more competitive tire products tailored to the needs of consumers in different regions.
Regarding technological innovation, with the booming new energy vehicle market, developing high-performance tires suitable for these vehicles will be key to Sumitomo Rubber's efforts to unlock new profit growth opportunities.
Expected to Reverse the Situation and Achieve a Steady Recovery
Although Sumitomo Rubber's performance in the first half of 2025 was less than satisfactory, by accurately grasping market trends, flexibly adjusting its business strategy, and continuously promoting technological innovation, it is expected to reverse the situation and achieve a steady recovery in performance in the future, maintaining a firm foothold in the fiercely competitive global tire market.
