Engineering Tire Market Growth
Currently, competition in various sub-sectors of the tire industry has become fierce. Engineering tires, characterized by high technological barriers and significant capital investment, coupled with considerable market potential, have become a focal point for industry development. In the past two years, major tire companies have increased their investment in this field, accelerating technological breakthroughs and capacity expansion.
As a core component of heavy equipment, engineering tires are widely used in high-intensity operating scenarios such as mining, infrastructure, and ports, placing stringent requirements on product structure, formulation design, and molding processes.
Especially for giant engineering tires, the large investment per tire and long R&D cycle create a high barrier to entry for companies' financial strength and technological accumulation. This also naturally avoids the homogeneous competition common in the low-to-mid-end market, providing more resilient profit margins for leading companies with R&D capabilities.
In terms of market potential, both the global and Chinese engineering tire markets are showing steady growth. According to CCID Consulting, the Chinese engineering tire market size is expected to grow from RMB 28.6 billion in 2023 to RMB 41.2 billion in 2028, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.6%.
In the international market, the IRGS predicts that the global engineering tire market will reach $13.24 billion by 2030, with giant radial tires showing particularly strong growth, becoming a core growth area that major companies are vying to develop.
Meanwhile, policy support is also injecting momentum into the upgrading of the engineering tire industry. National and local governments have issued a series of guiding policies covering multiple dimensions such as financial subsidies, land use guarantees, and green certification. Shandong, Jiangsu, Inner Mongolia, and other regions have formed differentiated support systems, effectively promoting the industry's transition from capacity expansion to technological innovation and green low-carbon transformation.
The implementation of policy documents such as the "Guiding Opinions on High-Quality Development of the Tire Industry" has also forced companies to accelerate breakthroughs in core technologies and improve the high-end level of their products through rigid environmental protection and energy efficiency requirements.
Against this backdrop, tire companies continue to deepen their engineering tire development. Domestically, Triangle Tire, after three years of research, launched a new adhesive protection technology that effectively solves the problem of adhesive failure in giant tires, reducing the delamination failure rate of related products by more than 95%, and has already been put into use in mines in Vietnam.
Fengshen Tire successfully rolled out its first all-steel radial engineering tire using a fully formulated wet-process technology, achieving a dual breakthrough in raw material application and green processes. Production capacity is also active.
Qingdao Qizhou Rubber has invested 715 million yuan in an off-road tire project, which will have a total capacity of 2.8 million tires upon completion. Shandong Maishijia Rubber has also launched a 3 billion yuan high-end tire project in Qingdao, with a planned annual production capacity of over 10 million high-end radial tires, including engineering tires.
Globally, India's BKT Tire Company has also launched an investment plan of approximately 2.64 billion yuan to expand its product portfolio based on its off-road tire business and further improve its global layout. Currently, the global engineering tire market presents a two-tiered structure: international brands dominate the high-end market, while domestic leaders seize the mid-to-high-end market.
Michelin and Bridgestone still hold the technological high ground, while leading domestic companies are accelerating the process of domestic substitution by relying on cost advantages, localization response, and continuous R&D. It is predicted that the localization rate of all-steel giant tires is expected to exceed 55% by 2028.
Looking ahead, driven by continued infrastructure investment, intelligent upgrades in mines, and the increasing penetration rate of electric mining trucks, the demand for high-end, radial, and intelligent engineering tires will continue to be released. Industry competition will shift from scale expansion to a comprehensive contest of core technologies, green manufacturing, and brand value.
Only companies that continuously focus on material innovation, process breakthroughs, and low-carbon transformation will be able to gain the initiative in this structural upgrade and seize the structural opportunities in the new development cycle.
