NEV Recharging Infrastructure Competition Escalates

New energy vehicle recharging infrastructure construction continues to upgrade. According to the National Energy Administration, as of the end of September, the total number of electric vehicle charging infrastructure units (guns) in China reached 24.777 million, a year-on-year increase of 37.2%. Among them, public charging facilities (guns) totaled 5.207 million, with a rated total power of 266 million kilowatts. According to the China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance, as of the end of September, the national battery swap station inventory reached 7,108 units.

Behind the rapid growth in volume, the supply-demand structure is undergoing profound changes. The question of "how to charge faster and better, and how to achieve efficient network interconnection" has become a new challenge for industry competition. Dongfeng Motor Group announced a group-level strategic cooperation agreement with CATL to jointly deploy ultra-charging integration and global ecosystem during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. This reflects that battery leaders are using standardized swap systems to link multiple mainstream automakers to build interoperable networks.

In September this year, Geely Holding announced a comprehensive strategic cooperation with NIO in the charging and swapping field. Geely Holding contributed 100% equity of Yiyi Internet Technology (Chongqing) Co., Ltd. and 640 million yuan in cash to invest in NIO Energy Investment (Hubei) Co., Ltd. After the transaction, Geely Holding will hold 30% of NIO Energy, and Yiyi Internet's commercial vehicle swap business will be fully merged into NIO Energy.

Industry analysts note that in the past, many automakers and platforms built their own stations with fragmented resources and duplicated investments. This type of equity cooperation marks a shift in industry cooperation from sharing stations to jointly operating a single network.

For the industry debate on "ultra-fast charging vs. battery swapping," both technological paths are advancing in parallel. Ultra-fast charging is pushing recharging time to the minute level, while battery swapping offers efficiency advantages with approximately 3 minutes per swap compared to about 30 minutes for fast charging.
