Vehicle Standard: Relaxed Smart‑Vehicle Protrusion, Higher NEV Axle‑Load(Sep 4)
National Standard for Vehicle Dimensions Published: Smart Vehicle Protrusion Limits Relaxed, New Energy Commercial Vehicle Axle Load Increased
The State Administration for Market Regulation (National Standardization Administration) recently approved and published the mandatory national standard "Dimensions, Axle Loads and Masses for Vehicles, Trailers and Combinations" (GB 1589-2026), which will take effect on July 1, 2027.
This standard specifies the limits for the dimensions, axle loads, and masses of vehicles, trailers, and vehicle combinations. The key revisions in this update include the following aspects:
Smart Connected Technology Adaptation
New exemption rules have been added for the dimensions of perception and communication components such as radar, cameras, and V2X antennas, relaxing local protrusion dimension limits to meet the needs of vehicle blind spot monitoring, autonomous driving environmental perception, vehicle-road collaboration, and beyond-visual-range safety communication.
New Energy Commercial Vehicle Axle Load Distribution
The maximum allowable axle load limit for single tires on each side of a single axle has been raised from 7,000 kg to 8,000 kg, effectively alleviating the front axle overload problem caused by concentrated battery loads in new energy commercial vehicles, providing greater design margin for axle load distribution and structural layout of new energy models.
Energy-Efficient Vehicle Innovation
New terminology definitions have been added for streamlined semi-trailer tractors and streamlined articulated combinations, specifying a length limit of 18.1 meters for streamlined articulated combinations, adapting to the development of low-drag energy-efficient models and supporting commercial vehicle carbon emission reduction.
Container Transport Convenience
The length limit for articulated combinations transporting 45-foot containers has been increased from 17.1 meters to 17.3 meters, while standardizing the maximum distance from the centerline of the semi-trailer coupling pin to the rear end of the vehicle at 12.2 meters, improving the convenience of container transport vehicle tractor-trailer matching and three-axle tractor selection, responding to the trend of increasing container total mass, and balancing multimodal transport efficiency with operational convenience.
Phased Implementation Plan
To ensure effective implementation of the standard while considering preparation periods for technical upgrades, cost investment, and new-to-old product transitions, the standard adopts a phased implementation schedule. For newly applying type-approved models, implementation begins on July 1, 2027; for models that have already obtained type approval, implementation begins on January 1, 2028.
The publication and implementation of this standard will further regulate industry development order, effectively protect consumer rights, promote the application of new technologies beneficial to transport efficiency and traffic safety in vehicles, and provide strong safeguards for people's lives and property safety.
